What A Blunderous Thing To Do!

Today the staff had a National Day Celebration at the Audi. Everything went well, even those who self-professed that they are the underdogs gave a redeeming performance, until...

...that same group of performers decided to take things into their own hands, hijacked the show, and caused it to end with their own rendition of a surprise item. With permission only from the Programme Coordinator, it was not hard to imagine that the rest of the people responsible for this group of performers were shocked to speechlessness.

For one, they had no idea that their charge was going to pull a stunt like that (it was meant to be a surprise what...). The Programme Coordinator apparently didn't know better than to allow something like that to happen. The whole event was supposed to end with a bang, it was actually there, but this surprise item dipped the whole climax. As my manager put it...they have ruined the show, undermined the otherwise well-rehearsed, painstakenly put-together programme to ensure quality performance. The 'surprise' item was less than presentable, and to think that instead of being remorseful, they think that it was successful and even used that to console themselves beyond the serious blunder. But what the Programme Coordinator and the performers didn't know is, that if anything had gone really wrong, heads are definitely going to roll...and I mean innocent, surprised (shocked) ones.

From the audience's angle, perhaps not much damage was done, cos they didn't know what was supposed to happen. The crew had to play along, though I suspect that they felt as perplexed. But it wasn't their job to question surprises like that. They were not prepared for it, but they had to go along to keep the show going as smoothly as possible.

Secondly, there wasn't QC (again, because it was a surprise). The fact that if they truly recognise that they are the underdogs, wouldn't it be too risky to do something without at least rehearsing? It's a high profile event, the top people are there, no room for mistakes. The risks outweighed any irresistibility to plant a surprise. It's like one of the groups of performers at NDP decided to do an impromptu item. You'll probably not see that group of performers in NDP the following year, or ever.

My conclusion is...the intention was sweet...but not enough to cover up the fact that it was highly inappropriate. Such acts are viewed as naivenss at best, and detrimental to the performers' future at worst. They were given one rare chance to proof themselves, and they just blew it.

I've never seen my SH so angry to students before. The culprits were brought to tears. No words of consolation to the offenders could discount the fact that it was a presumptuous act beyond comprehension. This is an outright disrespect and possible sabotage to those responsible for them even though they clearly have no idea of what it's going to cost them. I feel sorry for them because they would be blacklisted, monitored more closely, little left to trust from now on, at least for quite a while. However ignorant they were, they have to bear the consequence of their audacious stunt. The world is really not that forgiving.

Such a blunder...this wouldn't be my idea of trail blazers. So sad that it would only serve as a reminder, even for themselves, of a mistake not to be repeated again.
