Are You In For The Plowing?

Perhaps it was the band practice last night that got me all wired up, but I'm truly quite excited about where TP Band is heading.

My prayer is that this band would continue to move in this direction, to progress with every new batch of Management Committee, and that the dynamics of music-making with new people coming in every year would add to its maturity in quality.

It hasn't been easy for any of the Management Comittees to make it happen because it would mean moving against the flow and dragging people out of their comfort zone. Along the way, many have misunderstood and even frowned upon the necessary changes. And many times, the student leaders simply stopped trying because they couldn't see beyond what seemed like futility.

Sometimes I wonder what people mean when they say they love the band (or anything, or anybody). What is their definition of love and which aspect of it do they have that affection for? If you love something, wouldn't you want it to become better? Or does that love cease when it becomes inconvenient? If progress is the desire, then wouldn't it be ridiculous to hope for it and yet detest the needed discipline and hardwork. It's a basic principle. Why can't people embrace it and appreciate the courage their peers have taken to make a difference? Isn't it something worth celebrating?

How can 2 persons walk together unless they have agreement? You're either in or out. Sitting on the fence and whine would only hurt your backside. You'd either be a pain in your own butt or that of another. So why not welcome it, embrace it, and you'll see yourself involved in a higher level of fun that's deeper and and more fulfilling. Not some lame "fun" that's shallow and produces temporary outcome. Grow up already.

I admire the current batch of Management Committee for sticking to the vision of a more quality-sounding band. Actually I'm quite surprised that anybody would want the band to stay the same. Wouldn't people be proud that we are progressing? Sure it would mean less fooling around during practices, more stringent operations and more serious (but beautiful) pieces to play. In other words, more sacrifices and dedication. But I believe if we can see beyond our individual self, and catch the vision, all these would become a very near possibility and all sacrifices would be worth it.

It's difficult when you have people who don't appreciate the change. Sometimes human beings are like that, we want to remain status quo, unwilling to budge, especially if we may not see ourselves directly reaping the fruit of hard work during. Moreover, it the only think constant in life is change, then perhaps there are enough changes to deal with as it is and we are only prepared to adjust so much at any one time. Then it's time to make a decision because the changes are already here, like it or not. Using the words of our government: Are you a stayer, or a quitter?

Whether you quit prematurely or stay? What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind when you eventually move on?
